Background of the study
Digital communication reshapes how meaning is constructed and shared. In Nigeria, Facebook and Twitter offer contrasting environments that influence semantic networks. Facebook, with its lengthy posts and detailed discussions, supports the development of complex, layered semantic associations. In contrast, Twitter’s brevity fosters the condensation of ideas into concise, potent messages that often rely on hashtags and abbreviations (Ibrahim, 2023). These platforms affect the way users connect words and ideas, leading to shifts in semantic meaning over time. As cultural, political, and social issues are debated online, semantic networks evolve rapidly. This study compares how Facebook and Twitter shape semantic relationships among Nigerian users by analyzing word associations, contextual meanings, and usage trends. It explores how platform-specific affordances—such as character limits and multimedia integration—influence semantic evolution, offering insights into the dynamic interplay between digital communication and meaning-making (Okafor, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While digital semantic shifts are evident in Nigerian online discourse, few studies have compared the influences of Facebook and Twitter on semantic networks. Existing research tends to generalize digital language trends without distinguishing platform-specific impacts, limiting our understanding of how different media contribute to meaning change. This gap restricts the development of refined models of semantic evolution in digital contexts (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare semantic networks on Nigerian Facebook and Twitter.
  2. To identify platform-specific influences on meaning-making.
  3. To assess the impact of these changes on traditional semantic frameworks.

Research questions

  1. How do semantic networks differ between Facebook and Twitter in Nigeria?
  2. What digital affordances influence semantic evolution on each platform?
  3. What implications do these shifts have for conventional meaning?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of semantic evolution in Nigerian digital communication. Its insights will benefit linguists and educators by clarifying how social media platforms contribute to dynamic meaning-making processes, thereby informing updated semantic models (Ibrahim, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to Nigerian Facebook and Twitter content and does not extend to other platforms or offline communication.

Definitions of terms
• Semantic Networks: Interconnected systems of meaning created through language.
• Digital Discourse: Communication that occurs online.
• Meaning-Making: The process of constructing and interpreting meaning.
